If WooCommerce payment methods are not showing at checkout, customers may reach the final step and see no way to pay.
This is different from a card being declined. The payment option itself is missing.
The most useful question is:
Is the gateway enabled but unavailable for this specific customer and basket, or is the checkout failing to load it at all?
WooCommerce payment methods not showing: quick checks
| Symptom | Check first |
|---|---|
| No payment methods at all | Gateway settings, checkout errors, SSL |
| Stripe missing but others show | Stripe connection/settings/eligibility |
| Only some customers lose a method | Country, currency, basket rules |
| Method disappeared after checkout redesign | Checkout Block compatibility |
| Method appears after refresh | Cache or checkout refresh |
| Works on staging, not live | Cache, security, live-mode credentials |
1. Check the payment method is enabled
Go to:
WooCommerce → Settings → Payments
Confirm the payment method is switched on.
If you use Stripe, PayPal or another gateway, also open that gateway’s own settings and confirm the account connection is healthy.
2. Check live mode vs test mode
A payment gateway may behave differently in test mode and live mode.
Check:
- test mode is off when taking real payments;
- live credentials are present;
- the live account is activated;
- the gateway is allowed to accept payments;
- there are no account restrictions.
3. Check SSL and HTTPS
Live card payments should run on a secure HTTPS checkout.
If the checkout is loading over HTTP, contains mixed content, or has an invalid SSL certificate, a gateway may refuse to appear or work.
If the site shows a security warning, fix that before taking payments.
4. Check whether the payment method has conditions
A gateway can be enabled but not available for every order.
Common conditions include:
- billing country;
- shipping country;
- currency;
- cart total;
- product type;
- subscription status;
- customer role;
- selected shipping method.
If one customer cannot see the method, reproduce their exact basket and address.
5. Check the order total
A zero-value order may not need a normal payment method.
Very small or very large totals can also fall outside gateway rules.
Test with a normal-priced product and no coupon to remove those variables.
6. Check currency support
Some payment methods do not support every currency.
If you use a currency switcher, test:
- default store currency;
- customer-selected currency;
- whether the gateway supports both;
- whether conversion plugins are hiding the method.
7. Check country and address rules
Some methods appear only for customers in supported countries or regions.
Test a complete billing and shipping address.
A payment method may appear before the address is entered, then disappear when WooCommerce learns the customer is outside the supported region.
8. If Stripe is missing, refresh its payment-method settings
Stripe can cache which payment methods are enabled.
If you recently changed the Stripe setup, refresh the Stripe payment-method settings and clear relevant cache/transients.
Then retest checkout in a private browser.
9. Check whether the gateway supports your checkout type
Modern WooCommerce stores may use the Checkout Block. Older stores often use the classic/shortcode checkout.
Some payment plugins do not support both equally.
If a method disappeared after moving to the Checkout Block, confirm compatibility with the payment gateway.
10. Check conditional payment plugins
Some stores deliberately hide payment methods based on rules.
Examples:
- bank transfer only above £1,000;
- cash on delivery only in selected postcodes;
- PayPal hidden for subscriptions;
- card payment hidden for certain roles.
If the method is enabled in WooCommerce but unavailable at checkout, check these rules.
11. Check cache and optimisation
Checkout payment choices can change with:
- address;
- currency;
- shipping;
- cart total.
A stale cached checkout can show the wrong state.
Exclude checkout from full-page caching and test again.
12. Check JavaScript errors
Payment methods often depend on scripts loading correctly.
A broken script can leave:
- blank payment area;
- endless spinner;
- missing card fields;
- payment options that appear then vanish.
If you are not technical, ask your developer to check the browser console and failed network requests. You do not need to fix the code yourself.
13. Check recent plugin and theme updates
If payment options vanished suddenly, check what changed.
Common causes include:
- gateway plugin update;
- WooCommerce update;
- theme update;
- checkout customiser;
- security plugin;
- performance plugin;
- currency plugin.
Test conflicts safely using staging.
14. Check WooCommerce Status
Go to WooCommerce → Status.
Look for:
- outdated templates;
- PHP/version warnings;
- gateway-related problems;
- failed scheduled actions where relevant.
15. Check gateway logs
If the gateway offers logs, enable or open them and reproduce the checkout once.
Look for clear errors around the time of the test.
Do not share secret API keys publicly when asking for support.
16. Test with a simple basket
Remove complications.
Use:
- one normal product;
- default currency;
- no coupon;
- normal UK address if that is your market;
- standard shipping method.
If the payment method returns, add the other conditions back one at a time.
17. Separate “method missing” from “payment failed”
These are different problems.
If the card option appears but the payment is declined or gets stuck on 3D Secure, use the WooCommerce Stripe payment-failed guide.
If no payment method appears at all, stay focused on availability, checkout compatibility and loading.
18. Test a full purchase after the fix
Do not stop when the logo reappears.
Complete a test payment and confirm:
- payment succeeds;
- order is created once;
- order status updates;
- stock changes;
- customer email sends;
- admin email sends.
If emails fail afterwards, use the WooCommerce email troubleshooting guide.

When missing payment methods are urgent
If customers can reach checkout but cannot see any way to pay, your store is losing ready-to-buy customers.
Core Web UK provides urgent WooCommerce checkout repair for live stores.
Test payment availability with several customer conditions
| Test | Why |
|---|---|
| Default currency | Confirms basic gateway setup |
| Another supported country | Checks region rules |
| Low-value basket | Checks minimum limits |
| High-value basket | Checks maximum/risk rules |
| With and without coupon | Checks zero/changed totals |
This helps reveal whether a method is broken globally or simply unavailable under one condition.
Express payment buttons are separate from the main card method
Apple Pay, Google Pay and other express options can have extra requirements. A normal card form can work while an express button is missing. Treat them as separate tests and confirm domain/account requirements for the specific gateway.
Do not confuse a temporary loading message with a permanent missing method
Some checkout interfaces can briefly show an unavailable message while payment options are still loading. Reproduce the issue on a normal connection and check whether the method eventually appears. If customers must wait or the message remains, investigate the checkout loading path.
After changing payment settings, clear the right cache and re-test
Payment settings can be cached by the gateway, checkout or site. Refresh gateway settings and clear relevant cache before deciding the change failed.
Check guest checkout and logged-in checkout separately
Membership, role and saved-payment settings can change what a returning customer sees. Test both a fresh guest and a normal customer account.
Check physical and virtual products separately
Some payment methods depend on shipping or product type. Build one basket with a physical product and another with a virtual product. If the gateway appears for one but not the other, the rule is narrower than a site-wide failure.
Keep a payment-method test sheet
| Method | Guest | Account | Mobile | Test payment |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Card/Stripe | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
| PayPal/other | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
| Express wallet | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
Run it after checkout redesigns or gateway updates.
Never publish gateway credentials in screenshots
When asking for help, hide API keys, secret keys, webhook secrets and private account information. A support screenshot should show the error, not expose the credentials that protect your payment account.
Pause campaigns if checkout has no payment method
If every customer is blocked, do not keep sending paid traffic to the store. Fix and test payment first, then restart the campaign.
Check what the customer saw before the payment area
Shipping and billing details can decide which payment methods WooCommerce makes available. If the method vanishes only after the customer enters an address, that is a strong clue that country, currency or shipping rules are involved.
Check gateway account status outside WordPress
A plugin can be installed and enabled while the payment provider account itself is restricted, disconnected or awaiting verification. Log in to the gateway dashboard and check for notices, not only the WordPress toggle.
Have a safe backup payment option where appropriate
Some businesses choose to offer more than one payment method so one provider outage does not stop every order. Whether that is sensible depends on fees, fraud risk and your customers. Test every backup method regularly; an unused backup is no help if it is broken too.
WooCommerce payment methods FAQs
Why are no payment methods showing in WooCommerce?
Check gateway settings, SSL, country/currency rules, cart conditions, checkout compatibility, caching and plugin conflicts.
Why is Stripe not showing at WooCommerce checkout?
Check Stripe is enabled and connected, live mode is configured, HTTPS works, supported payment methods are enabled and the checkout is compatible.
Can a payment method disappear for only some customers?
Yes. Country, currency, cart total, shipping method, product type and conditional payment rules can affect availability.
Why did payment methods disappear after switching to Checkout Block?
The gateway or an extension may not fully support the block-based checkout. Confirm compatibility and test with the previous checkout on staging.
Is a missing payment method the same as a failed payment?
No. Missing means the customer cannot select the gateway. Failed means the gateway appeared but the transaction did not complete.
