Microsoft has released a series of updates to its Edge browser that further integrate artificial intelligence, passwordless authentication and enterprise management tools, highlighting how web browsers are evolving into productivity and AI platforms rather than simple internet access tools.
The latest updates, included in Microsoft Edge versions 148 and 149 released during May and June 2026, introduce new Copilot capabilities, passkey synchronisation, enterprise controls and agentic browsing features that allow AI to navigate websites and complete tasks on behalf of users.
The changes reflect a broader industry shift as major technology companies increasingly position browsers as gateways to AI-powered services and workplace applications.
Microsoft has expanded support for Copilot across Edge, including a new AI-focused settings page, a refreshed Copilot New Tab Page and additional administrative controls that allow organisations to manage how AI features operate within their environments.
The company has also opened sign-ups for a limited public preview of “Browsing with Copilot” for enterprise customers. The feature enables Copilot to perform multi-step tasks, navigate websites and automate repetitive browser activities.
Another notable update is the introduction of passkey synchronisation for enterprise users. The feature allows passwordless credentials created in Edge to sync across devices, supporting the wider industry move away from traditional passwords toward more secure authentication methods.
For businesses, Microsoft has added new management capabilities, including extension monitoring, new policy controls for Copilot and the ability to temporarily downgrade WebView2 runtime versions to address application compatibility issues.
The company is also retiring some legacy features. Collections, a tool introduced to help users save and organise web content, has been removed from Edge version 149 as Microsoft shifts its focus toward AI-driven experiences and modernised browser interfaces.
The updates also include a redesigned interface intended to create a more unified experience across Microsoft’s AI products, including Copilot and Bing.
